Prepare a first response
CDC’s guidance about conversations on relationships encourages openness, repeated conversations, and avoiding overreaction. A useful first step is thinking about how you respond when a topic catches you off guard.
An original reflection exercise
Imagine your teen asks a question you were not expecting. Write a first sentence that thanks them for coming to you. Then write a question that helps you understand what they want to know. Avoid inventing facts when you are unsure.
Leave room for another conversation
You might agree to find reliable information together and return to the topic. This exercise is about how to begin listening; it is not a complete guide to relationships, health, or safeguarding.
Aim for an opening that makes another conversation possible.
