Child-led play gives you an opportunity to join a child’s idea. Use these points to practise attention while keeping the materials appropriate.
Describe rather than taking over
If a child invents a block garden, describe something you notice. This original example lets the child keep shaping the idea rather than turning play into constant questions.
Description is one way to show attention while they lead.
Choose safe, suitable materials
Letting a child lead does not remove the adult’s responsibility for safety. Select materials suited to the child’s age, abilities, and current play.
Child-led play still needs safe, suitable materials.
