A pool visit involves several small decisions before anyone gets in. Plan who is watching and how children could reach the water.

Assign a focused supervising adult

A responsible adult should watch children closely and constantly near water, avoiding phones and other distractions even when lifeguards are present.

THE POINT TO REMEMBER

Close, constant supervision remains necessary around water.

Keep watching after swimming lessons

Swimming skills reduce risk but do not remove it. Children who have had lessons still need close supervision.

THE POINT TO REMEMBER

Swimming lessons do not make a child drown-proof.

Use a proper life jacket

Use appropriate life jackets for children around natural water. Inflatable or foam toys are not safety devices.

THE POINT TO REMEMBER

Air-filled toys do not provide the protection of a life jacket.

Read it. Try it. Come back to why.

Original reflection: before the next water visit, name the supervising adult and agree how responsibility will be handed over. Check access barriers at the destination too.
