Use age-specific guidance and adapt activities to the child. Read the points below, then use each linked situation to practise a decision.

Spread young children’s play across the day

For ages one to four, UK guidance recommends at least 180 minutes of activity spread across the day, including light activity.

THE POINT TO REMEMBER

The time includes ordinary active play, not three continuous hours of organised sport.

Use the older-child recommendation

For ages five to eighteen, UK general guidance aims for an average of at least 60 minutes of moderate or vigorous activity daily across the week.

THE POINT TO REMEMBER

The guidance is an average across the week, with varied activities.

Adapt movement to the child

Activities should suit age, ability, and experience. Disability or a health condition may call for different guidance and support.

THE POINT TO REMEMBER

Movement plans should be manageable and appropriate to the individual.
